Verso Text: Fifty years ago, Project Mercury set the United States on a path that would lead to the stunning Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969, the crowning technological achievement of the 20th century.
Initiated in 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Project Mercury was the nation's program to send a manned spacecraft into orbit around the Earth. On May 5, 1961, as the world watched on television, NASA astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space after blasting off from Cape Canaveral.
Although Shepard did not orbit the Earth that day, his 15-minute, 300-mile flight "roused the country to one of its highest peaks of exultation since the end of World War II," reported the New York Times. Emboldened by the achievement, President John F. Kennedy declared later that month that America "should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth."
In March 2011, America achieved another milestone in its 50 years of space exploration. In an unprecedented scientific investigation of the planet closest to the sun, NASA's unmanned MESSENGER, launched on August 3, 2004, became the first spacecraft to enter into orbit around Mercury.
Scientists have conceived the MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) mission to investigate several important features of "the least-studied terrestrial planet" in our solar system, including Mercury's geologic history, the nature of its magnetic field, the structure of its metal-rich core, and the unusual materials, possibly ice, at its poles.
The data obtained by MESSENGER during the year-long orbit will be analyzed for many years to come. Scientists think the data may tell us how the planet took shape and also offer clues about the origin of our solar system.
